Institutions such as universities, colleges, schools and ABET providers. Institution-based theoretical instruction alone. Formally assessed by the institution. Funded by Khula Bursary Company and under the study leadership of Prof. Janet, Lizo Mhlontlo is busy with his master’s degree research program, as an investigation into the socio-economic impact of communal property associations in O.R. Tambo District in the Eastern Cape. He completed his Honours in Development Economics and International Development. He is skilled as Project Co-ordinator and fulfil functions like:
- Facilitate social, economic and ICT related infrastructure development.
- Effectively manage State resources.
- Conceptualize, design and implement infrastructure projects.
- Coordinate the alignment of intra and inter departmental budgets at project level.
- Represent the Department at district and provincial fora.
- Assist with Management of appointment Service Providers, oversee project implementation and report on progress.
- Participate in Technical Task Teams at Local and District level.
- Monitor and follow up with stakeholders on the implementation of Infrastructure projects.
- Act as a link between identified stakeholders, service providers and Council of Stakeholders.
- Assist with monitoring and liaising with local and District Office on issues that need support and intervention.
Another post-graduate student under the guidance of Prof Cherry and financially supported by Khula Bursary Company is, Queen Mathabela. Her research topic is: A sustainable development lens to understanding community participation in rural development: a case of Malamulele Village. Malamulele is an area are in the Limpopo Province predominantly occupied by Tsonga people. It is near the big town Giyani and Levubu River (Rivhubye) to the west and Letaba River to the east, meanwhile the Shingwedzi River runs from Malamulele West to Malamulele East, joining the Olifants in Mozambique on its way to the Indian Ocean. Malamulele is the seat of the Collins Chabane Local Municipality. The Malamulele area, with an approximate population of half a million according to stats from 2011 shows a huge increase in population form the stats of 2001 that reflects it then were home to 206,646 people. This huge increase of people are still under the governance of independent traditional chiefs.
Some of Prof Cherry’s other Post Graduate students, also funded by Khula Bursary Company is Nomonde Ndararane, doing her research on the role played by the circular economy in Solid Waste Management. Lulethu Buso, pursuing his Masters in Development Studies (Research). He has a strong research background with expertise in food security, food sovereignty, urban agriculture, and action research. He is involved in different community projects, facilitating workshops, and applying Participatory Rural Appraisal tools to collect and analyze data. Liahona Nqunqa, also busy with post-graduate research is a Social Development Profession Intern at Nelson Mandela University. Nkensani Sihlangu is busy with her post-graduate research and Isaac Kapayi with his continuous research and dynamic research paper on An assessment of asset-based community development as a paradigm to promote ownership to communities of Nkonkobe Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape.
Monde Rapiya, is a PhD candidate at the University of Pretoria and a recent Master of Science graduate in Agricultural Pasture Science. Monde is professionally registered with the South African Council for Natural Scientist Professions [SACNASP] as a Candidate Natural Scientist and a member South African Society for Animal Science [SASA]. Passionate about working with people both young and old, Monde demonstrates the ability to deliver service focused on planning, scientific knowledge, and skills development in the field of Agriculture and ecology. Monde seeks challenging opportunities where he can fully use his skills and knowledge for the success of the organization. The main objective of Monde is to monitor, access, and map natural rangelands using remote sensing technology. Also, rehabilitate and manage those natural rangelands with the use of the different grazing systems to improve both wildlife and livestock production. This dedication of Monde will have a huge effect on the promotion and realistic economic growth and transformation for food security impact in Southern Africa. Khula Bursary Company is proud to have contributed with two bursaries donations from corporate donars into Monde’s dynamic academic career path.
Likhona Cele, Khula Bursary Company supported MsC Agriculture in Pasture Science student is a Laboratory Technician for the Forage, Pasture & Land Reclamation Sciences Programme (FPLRS) at University of Pretoria. She embraced the opportunity to execute her master research topic in this environment. The FPLRS Research Group is an initiative by the Department of Plant and Soil (DePSS) Sciences in association with the Centre of Environmental Studies (CFES). The group’s research is interdisciplinary with Agronomy, Soil Science, Ecology, Environmental Science, Animal and Wildlife Sciences and Veterinary Sciences.
Another MsC Agriculture student at Pretoria University support by Khula Bursary Company is Mahuma Ramashala. Her dedication and research is directed towards the National Biodiversity Research & Evidence Strategy (2015-2025)’s Research Science-Policy Interface. The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) is committed to strengthen the knowledge, science and policy interface for environmental related matters. Collaboration through applied science is therefore of essence.
The three dynamic students above are under the soft leadership of Khula Bursary Company partner, Professor Wayne Truter. Wayne is Professor (Associate) & Research Programme Director – Pasture Based Livestock Production /Land Reclamation at Pretoria University. He is passionate in developing students to excel in their career paths. “We all have a sixth sense – which is the love for something – and this develops as we experience the passion for that something using all our other senses; seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling and tasting it. ” A true quote from his heart”. His professional experience entails land (Degraded or mined agricultural land) reclamation planning and management, with particular emphasis on understanding the interrelationships of soil, grasses, legumes, water and livestock and game. His specialization focuses on establishing the most sustainable, economical and practically feasible reclaimed land use management system in disturbed environments. This includes forage and pasture management as an important component of a fodder flow programme.
Four more students form the Department Animal and Wildlife Sciences, University Pretoria, under the guidance of Dr Lindeque du Toit was supported with bursary by Khula Bursary Company. Dr Du Toit does research in Animal Science, focusing livestock nutrition, forage quality and the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions from livestock production systems. Their current project is ‘Evaluation of the nutritional quality, in vitro total gas and methane production of maize silage treated with different microbial inoculants’. He and his students are passionate about this controversial but very relevant topic related to Global Warming and the balancing facture in nature.
The journey for the Khula Bursary Company team with a student called Bontle Chaka has been heart warming and very emotional both sides. It is a policy of the team to search for unique talent and exceptional students with a heart for development and a desire to grow and be able to unlock change in our societies. This process is done through personal relationship with reputable referencing and endorsement. Bontle was initially referred by Dr Sonja Cruywagen, from Pretoria University’s Music Department, where she completed her degree. Dr Cruywagen shared with the team, Bontle’s passion for people and her heart to bring change in the education of music to disadvantaged and under serviced communities. Thereafter Bontle was also endorsed by Dr Ronel De Villiers from University Pretoria’s Department Education, as a diligent student with exceptional leadership skills and a unique individual with a big heart and lots of care for all. She completed with high score her Post Graduate Certificate for Education.
The Department of Development Studies at Nelson Mandela University partnered with Khula Bursary Company to disburse available funds from donors as bursaries to Post Graduate students. Professor Janet Cherry is a researcher and activist in the field of sustainable and participatory development. She has an interdisciplinary background in economic history and political sociology, with her qualifications being a PhD in political sociology from Rhodes University and Honours and Masters in Economic History from the University of Cape Town. She has done research in the fields of social and political history, civil society and social movements, political participation, human rights, land, gender and sustainable development. She has worked as a researcher for the HSRC Democracy and Governance programme and the SA Truth and Reconciliation Commission, among others, and as a researcher and trainer in many African countries. She is currently involved in action research on township economies and sustainable development in the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality, namely the Sustainable Settlement Pilot Project and the Transition Township Project. Her Masters and Doctoral students are working in the fields of food sovereignty, conservation agriculture, land and sustainable livelihoods in Sub-Saharan Africa.
